This has, in these times of increased consumption and uncertain climate, become important even in Britain. As with any green issue, the first step is to become more conscious of how much water you're using, and why.

• Many gardening organisations are now providing  hints on gardening in drier conditions.
• Water butts are a good way of saving water by using rainwater instead of tap water for the garden. Some have devices to prevent overflowing.
